Designated Special Inspector DSI

DSI Description
The Designated Special Inspector (DSI) is a Registered Design Professional employed by a Special Inspection Firm (SIF) contracted by the Owner who is experienced with a particular type of construction and qualified to manage the required Special Inspections.
 
Qualification Criteria for DSI
Structural Inspection Types:
NC registered engineer that can demonstrate specialized training, experience and competence specific to the inspection of the structural or lateral force resisting systems for the specified structural category(s).

  IT-01 Verification of Soils
  IT-02 Excavation and Filling
  IT-03 Piling and Drilled Piers
  IT-04 Modular Retaining Walls
  IT-05 Reinforced Concrete
  IT-06 Post Tension Slabs-on-Ground and Post Tension Concrete
  IT-07 Precast Concrete Erection
  IT-08 Prestressed Concrete
  IT-10 Inspection of Structural Steel Fabricators
  IT-11 Structural Masonry
  IT-12 Welding
  IT-13 High Strength Bolting and Steel Frame Inspection
  IT-16 Seismic Resistance

Non-Structural Inspection Types:
NC registered engineer or architect that can demonstrate specialized training, experience and competence specific to the inspection of the specified non-structural system category(s).

  IT-09 Inspection of Pre-Cast Concrete Fabricators
  IT-14 Sprayed Fire-Resistant Materials
  IT-15 Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS)

Other Inspection Types:


  IT-17 Smoke Control; IBC Section 1704.14
  • Certified as required in IBC Section 1704.14.2; OR
    • Copy of resume to include expertise in fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering and certification as air balancer – Air balancer certification may be one of the following:
      • AABC ( Associated Air Balance Council
      • TABB ( Testing & Balancing Bureau
      • NEBB ( National Environmental Balancing Bureau)
      • NBI ( National Balancing Council)
  • Engineer of Record
  IT-18 Detention Basin; IBC Section 1704.13
  • Professional Land Surveyor registered in the State of North Carolina, or
  • Professional Engineer registered in the State of North Carolina.
  IT-19 Special Cases; IBC Section 1704.13
  • Determined on a case-by-case basis.
 
Getting Certified
To become a certified DSI, you must complete the online application and submit it for approval. A DSI is only permitted to work on the type of Special Inspections that they are certified for as listed on the profile page of meck-si.com.
 
Duties
The DSI is responsible for overseeing the Special Inspections process, including the direction, management, reporting of activities by the ASI and insuring the correct documentation appears on meck-si.com. Where necessary, review facilities to verify Fabricator’s ability to comply with drawings, specifications, and referenced standards. Where applicable, receive Fabricator’s Certificate of Compliance, and upload it to meck-si.com. Provide specific inspection and testing services as required by the Statement of Special Inspections (SSI). In addition to the duties described below, a DSI may perform any duties of an ASI. At the conclusion of Special Inspections, the DSI is required to provide the Final Report indicating that the required Special Inspections have been performed and all Non-Conforming Work or Discrepancies have been identified and/or resolved.
